Mussoorie, 6 Mar: Polylinguist, educationist, and social activist Dharam Singh Farswan has submitted a detailed proposal to the Uttarakhand government regarding the global promotion of the world-famous Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra and the production of an international-level documentary on this sacred pilgrimage. He believes that, if this divine journey is presented with well-planned, modern technology, and international standards, it can elevate the cultural prestige of not only Uttarakhand but the entire country on the world stage. According to Farswan, a concrete strategy is needed to bring global recognition to the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, considered a unique confluence of faith, folk culture, and Himalayan traditions. He suggested that formal invitations be sent to embassies of various countries, international universities, research institutions, global news channels, and media representatives, so that they can witness this unique cultural event firsthand and promote its significance to the world.

Farswan, who previously taught at St George’s College, said that, if a high-level international documentary is produced on the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, it will enable widespread publicity of Uttarakhand’s languages, folk culture, traditional cuisine, tourist destinations, and natural heritage. He also proposed that highlights of the journey be recorded in various international languages and disseminated worldwide through digital and broadcast media. He also suggested publishing a multilingual tourist guide for Uttarakhand so that foreign tourists and researchers can better understand the state’s culture and traditions.

Farswan added that international researchers should be encouraged to study the state’s medicinal herbs, forest wealth, folk culture, mountain agriculture, water resources, and Himalayan biodiversity. This will not only expand knowledge but also create new employment opportunities in the state and the country. He said that such long-term initiatives will strengthen the state’s economy and help reduce the problem of migration. Migration for education, health, and employment can also be positively impacted. Farswan suggested that international research projects be conducted through institutions like Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Doon University, and Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. Cultural exchange programmes should also be initiated and joint projects related to tourism and traditional knowledge developed. He stated that, if the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra is organised with systematic management, modern technology, international publicity, and environmental balance in mind, it could strengthen Uttarakhand’s identity globally.

It is worth noting that the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra is often referred to as the “Mahakumbh of the Himalayas”. It is considered one of the longest religious pilgrimages in the world, starting from the Nauti and Kurud areas of Chamoli district and lasting approximately 22 days to the inaccessible peaks of the Himalayas. Being a unique confluence of faith, folk tradition, and nature, this Yatra is a living symbol of Uttarakhand’s cultural identity. Dharam Singh Farswan and BN Purohit have also requested former Governor and former Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari to support the proposal in discussing the matter with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and BJP State President Mahendra Bhatt. Furthermore, the proposal has been sent to the Chief Minister for consideration through Tharali MLA Bhopal Ram Tamta and Karnaprayag MLA Anil Nautiyal.

Meanwhile, priests of Goddess Bhagwati, Ashok Gaur, Surjeet Singh, and retired Colonel Harendra Singh Rawat, among others, also expressed support for the initiative and urged public representatives to convey it to the Chief Minister. Farswan believes that, if the government takes concrete steps in this direction, the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra will not only become a symbol of Uttarakhand’s spiritual tradition but will also establish a unique identity for Himalayan culture and nature on a global scale.
