Dehradun, 5 Aug: Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee President Karan Mahara today expressed grief over the devastation and loss of life caused by the recent cloudburst in Dharali, Uttarkashi, and extended condolences to the bereaved families. Calling for immediate action by the government, Mahara has demanded that the state government relocate affected residents to safer zones to safeguard their lives and property amidst the continuing heavy rainfall.

The PCC Chief asserted that incessant rains have unleashed widespread havoc across the state, with Dharali bearing the brunt of the cloudburst’s fury. He added that similar distressing situations are being reported from several other districts, where connectivity with district headquarters has been disrupted due to landslides and flooding. Mahara also criticised the state’s disaster management department, alleging it failed to make prior safety arrangements despite advance warnings issued by the Meteorological Department.

Underlining the recurring nature of such calamities, Mahara reminded that previous disasters caused by cloudbursts and torrential rainfall in the hill districts have not resulted in effective implementation of safety measures. This ongoing negligence, he claimed, has instilled a deep sense of fear among residents of disaster-prone areas. He also underscored the plight of 377 villages that had earlier been earmarked for displacement following repeated calamities over the years, noting that proper rehabilitation measures are yet to be undertaken for these communities.

Appealing to the disaster management department to act promptly, Mahara emphasised the urgency of relocating vulnerable residents before further damage ensues, especially with continued heavy rainfall forecasted. He urged Congress workers across the state to come together and support those suffering due to the calamity.

Reiterating his demand, Mahara called on Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to ensure adequate safety measures are implemented in the disaster hit zones and to expedite the relocation of affected residents without further delay.
