Man duped for Rs 5 lakh with fake power bill generation

DEHRADUN, 24 May:man lost Rs 5 lakh in the name of electricity bill. The fraudsters posed as an employee of UPSC and sent him a link to update his electricity bill. As he clicked the link, several transactions were made and a large amount of money got siphoned off.
According to the FIR registered by Dinesh Chandra Goswami from Harrawala, has become a victim of online fraud. He received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number saying that he had not paid his electricity bill for the month of April. The message also gave another number and told him to call it to update his bill.
Believing the message to be true, Dinesh called the given number. The person on the call claimed to be an employee of UPCL and sent him a link on WhatsApp. He told Dinesh to click the link to update his electricity bill. As soon as Dinesh clicked the link, several transactions were made from his bank account and credit card.
In total, around Rs 4.9 lakh was stolen from his SBI bank account and credit card. Dinesh filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime police station in Dehradun. The police have registered a Zero FIR and started an investigation.
Cyber police have again advised people not to trust unknown links and phone calls. People should always verify such messages by contacting official customer care numbers.
