Dehradun, 28 May: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Uttarakhand within the next 10 to 15 days, a lot earlier than its usual onset around 20 June 20. This advancement follows the monsoon’s early arrival over Kerala on 24 May, marking one of the earliest onsets in recent years.
According to Bikram Singh, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Dehradun, the monsoon has progressed beyond South India into parts of Central India and the Northeastern states. He stated that, if the monsoon maintains its current pace, it should reach Uttarakhand in about 10 days; even if its progress slows, it is expected to arrive within 15 days.
The IMD’s updated long-range forecast indicates that the country is likely to experience above-normal rainfall during the June to September monsoon season, with an expected rainfall of 106% of the long-period average (LPA). Specifically, for June 2025, nationwide rainfall is projected to be above normal, exceeding 108% of the LPA.
In Uttarakhand, the monsoon season often brings challenges such as landslides and disruptions to the Char Dham Yatra. With the anticipated early and heavier rainfall this year, district administrations and the state government are urged to expedite their preparedness measures to mitigate potential risks.
Recent weather patterns in Dehradun have shown unusual humidity levels for May, with relative humidity reaching up to 82 percent causing discomfort among residents. Experts attribute this early moisture build up to shifting wind patterns and premature incursions of moisture from the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, suggesting potential long-term changes in regional climate patterns.
The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms in Dehradun and Tehri Garhwal, advising residents to follow safety guidelines.
As the monsoon approaches, the tourists, the pilgrims, the authorities and the residents have been advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during the upcoming season.
