Dehradun, 27 July: Experts at Graphic Era Hospital have successfully performed an open heart surgery with a minor incision. Without making large incision or cutting the chest bone, these specialists have significantly reduced the complications associated with open heart surgery. They have performed two such surgeries in a week. These patients were not put in ICU for long.
Using the latest technology of medical science, this open heart surgery was performed with an incision of about 2 to 2.5 inches. Usually, bypass surgery or open heart surgery requires cutting the chest bone that connects the ribcage and making an incision of 6 inches. Leader of the team that successfully performed these surgeries with a 2.5 inch incision and HOD of Department of Cardiology in Graphic Era Hospital, Dr. Akhilesh Pandey said that this new technology results in less blood loss and the patients experience much less pain post operation. As a result, the patients are kept in the ICU for only a few days and they recover faster as well.
Dr Pandey said that after using the conventional method of open heart surgery, patients are generally advised against driving for about three months, lifting buckets, briefcases, etc. However, with this new technology patients can resume normal activities within a week or 10 days. He said that both the operations were performed on elderly residents of Dehradun one aged 80 and other aged 60. Both are recovering well now.
Cardiologist Dr Pandey said that six months earlier ten operations of changing heart valve and six operations of treating heart hole in children were performed in Graphic Era Hospital using the same new technology. All the operations were highly successful. The team of experts who performed this open heart surgery with the new technology included Dr Raj Pratap Singh, Dr Pulkit Malhotra and Dr Satya Prakash.
Director of Graphic Era Hospital Dr Punit Tyagi termed it as a revolutionary change in the field of heart surgery. He said that despite making a small incision and not cutting the chest bone in open heart and bypass surgery, this new technology has reduced discomfort and pain in patients. After successfully changing heart valve and treating the heart hole, Graphic Era Hospital has started using this new technology for open heart surgery. Dr Tyagi emphasized that due to advanced machinery and highly experienced specialists at Graphic Era Hospital new technologies are being applied for the treatment of various diseases.
