Dehradun, 6 Apr: The weather in Chamoli took a sudden turn today as rain and snowfall lashed the higher altitudes, bringing a sharp dip in temperatures across the region. Fresh snowfall was recorded at Badrinath Dham, Hemkund Sahib, and Auli, transforming the mountain landscape into a picturesque winter vista. While the plains across the country continue to grapple with rising temperatures, Uttarakhand is experiencing a persistent spell of wet weather this April. The Meteorological Centre in Dehradun has forecast continued rainfall across the state until Sunday, 12 April, with a specific orange alert issued for Tuesday, 7 April, and Wednesday, 8 April, when precipitation is expected to be at its peak.

According to the weather department, widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is anticipated on Tuesday across all districts, including Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. Snowfall is likely to occur at altitudes of 3,300 metres and above in these regions, while the remaining eight districts of the state will witness scattered light to moderate showers. This pattern is expected to persist into Wednesday, maintaining the orange alert as many areas continue to receive rainfall and high-altitude peaks see further snow accumulation. The intensity of the weather system is predicted to begin a gradual decline from Thursday, 9 April, with light to moderate rain limited to the five primary hill districts and the plains remaining largely dry.

By Friday, 10 April, the rain is expected to shrink further in scale, confined only to isolated spots in the higher reaches of Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh, with the snowfall level rising to altitudes of 3,700 metres and above. This trend is likely to continue through Saturday and Sunday. In terms of temperature fluctuations, the Meteorological Centre suggests that while maximum temperatures may rise by 1 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours, a significant drop of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius is expected in the subsequent days as the weather system matures across the state.
