Rishikesh, 12 Jan: A couple from Uttarkashi donated their newborn’s body for medical research after the baby passed away at AIIMS Rishikesh. The five-day old baby’s body was handed over to Graphic Era Medical College, Dehradun, for research purposes, with help from Lions Club Rishikesh Devbhoomi and Mohan Foundation.

Manoj Lal, a driver, and his wife Vinita Devi, residents of Adni Rauntal village, welcomed their baby boy on 6 January 2025. However, soon after birth, the baby had difficulty in breathing. On 7 January, the parents admitted him to AIIMS Rishikesh for treatment. Doctors found that the baby’s breathing and food pipes were fused, which created serious complications. With the parents’ consent, doctors performed surgery to save the baby. Unfortunately, during the operation, the baby suffered cardiac arrest and passed away. The grieving parents then consulted Anil Kakkar, a volunteer from the Mukti Dham Committee, regarding the last rites. Anil informed them that newborns are usually buried or immersed in the Ganga instead of being cremated. He suggested donating the body for medical research as another option. After discussing with their family, Manoj and Vinita decided to donate their son’s body for research. Though it was a painful decision, they found peace in knowing it would benefit medical science and society. This act of kindness has set a remarkable example.
