Uttarkashi, 5 Jun: The Yamunotri National Highway near Syana Chatti was suddenly blocked today during the Char Dham Yatra after a landslide brought down debris and stones from the hillside, completely obstructing the road. This led to the formation of long queues of vehicles on both the sides of the landslide area. For safety reasons the police administration immediately halted traffic temporarily and advised travellers to remain at safe locations.
According to information, a large quantity of debris fell on to the road near Syana Chatti today. On receiving the report, National Highway authorities rushed machinery to the site and began clearing operations. JCBs and other equipment have been deployed to reopen the road for traffic at the earliest. Pilgrims travelling to and from Yamunotri Dham faced inconvenience due to the closure, though police and administrative teams remain present at the spot, continuously updating travellers about the situation.
The officials have appealed to passengers to remain patient and follow instructions issued by the administration. Police have claimed that constant monitoring is being carried out in the landslide zone and no vehicle or person is being allowed to cross the affected stretch for safety reasons. The authorities stated that clearance work is progressing rapidly and, if weather remains favourable, the road is expected to be restored within a few hours.
As soon as the landslide was reported, officials from the departments concerned were dispatched to the site. National Highway machinery is working at full pace to remove the debris, while police have temporarily stopped traffic in the affected area. The District Disaster Management Department is keeping close watch on the situation and has urged travellers and locals to adhere to official advisories and avoid unnecessary movement until the route is declared safe. District Disaster Management Officer Shardul Gusain said that depending on weather conditions and progress of work, the road will be opened for traffic shortly.
With the rising heat and changing weather patterns ahead of the monsoon this year, landslides have been reported at several places in the hill regions. The administration is maintaining special vigilance on Char Dham routes. Travellers have been advised to remain updated about weather and road conditions during the pilgrimage and to strictly follow directions issued by the administration and police in case of emergencies. Rain continues across Uttarakhand, adding to difficulties for people as landslides have disrupted connectivity on several routes.
