Dehradun, 26 Jun: Inspector General (IG) Police and Director, Traffic, Mukhtar Mohsin, today, chaired a meeting to review the traffic system and road safety in Dehradun. Traffic management at 54 identified crossings/triangles of Dehradun, status of basement parking/courtyard parking, time staggering of closure time of schools to ensure smoother traffic flow, and towing of vehicles parked in no parking places were discussed in detail.
In addition, issues like cuts located on national highways, etc., the steps taken so far and future corrective measures were also discussed.
Most of the decisions taken and instructions issued during the meeting have been taken in the past also on several occasions, but the post decision implementation has not been satisfactory, so far. It remains to be seen how seriously the decisions taken today are implemented.
During the meeting, the Director of Traffic after reviewing the traffic jams and traffic system around ISBT, directed that the roadways buses parked on the roads should be asked to park inside the ISBT terminal. For this, cooperation will also be sought from the Transport Department. It was also noted that there is a lot of empty space under the ISBT flyover. To develop this space as a systematic parking area, cooperation of the NHAI, PWD (NH) and other state government institutions like MDDA and Doon Municipal Corporation (Doon Nagar Nigam) will be sought.
Mohsin stressed that the heavy vehicles parked in Transport Nagar will not be allowed to be parked on the road. A campaign would ensure they are parked in the parking lot. It was also decided that rumble strips will be installed on the road going from Chakrata Road to Cantt Area at the Bindal Cut to regulate the speed of vehicles.
The Director, Traffic, further emphasised that vehicles should be sent to tourist sites like Mussoorie, Rishikesh and Chakrata, etc., should be permitted strictly according to the parking capacity of the destination concerned. A gate system should be used to control the number of vehicles headed to these destinations. Notices would be sent to the owners of all the commercial buildings and complexes in Dehradun that do not have parking arrangements and vehicles are being parked on the roads.
He also directed the SP, Traffic, and DSP, Traffic, that for traffic awareness activities, they should prepare a chart of schools and colleges having UG and PG students and hold road safety awareness programmes there.
Mohsin emphasised that police personnel be also deployed at cuts along the national highways. In case of shortage of manpower, monitoring should be done by installing CCTVs at the said places and action taken against those driving in the wrong direction. Movement of interceptors and highway traffic patrol units should be maintained for immediate action.
Mukhtar Mohsin reminded the police personnel that, in a few days, schools will open in the city and then the traffic pressure will increase on the roads again. He stated that instructions have been issued to subordinates to maintain smooth traffic. They have also been directed to continue action against encroachments in the city. Instructions have also been issued to take strict action against those violating traffic rules.
