Dehradun, 13 Feb: Rotary Club Dehradun organised a talk on the Uniform Civil Code at North Point, Doon Club. Dr AK Srivastava, Principal, DAV Intermediate College, was the keynote speaker.
Dr Srivastava stated that UCC means the same rules and regulations for all citizens in terms of marriage, adoption, inheritance of property and other social norms. The concept of UCC is clearly mentioned in Article 44 of the Constitution. It is important to maintain gender equality and secularism and, also, to honour basic human rights. The constituent assembly of India acknowledged its need and significance in the interest of the common person.
UCC is certainly not against any religion and caste, he claimed. It will not interfere in day-to-day lives of people belonging to any religion. The plurality and diversity of the nation will not be endangered if UCC is implemented all over India. It has nothing to do with criminal and other public laws of the nation.
The UCC is already applicable in Goa which is one of the states of India. Citizens belonging to all communities live there without any problem and unpleasantness. Goa adopted the Portuguese Civil Code of Conduct after Independence. It gives equal rights to both husband and wife. They jointly own their property and assets. Polygamy is strictly prohibited.
The Supreme Court has advised the central government to introduce UCC. Dr Srivastava cited the illustration of Shah Bano and Sarla Mudgal cases in order to explain UCC.
UCC was in the election manifesto of BJP in 1998 and 2024. Hence, BJP is keen to introduce the UCC. The Uttarakhand Government has already introduced it recently. Now the government of Gujarat is also working seriously on this project.
Dr Srivastava also mentioned all rules and regulations introduced by the Uttarakhand government regarding Live-in Relationships in the present scenario and registration of marriages that have taken place after 2010.
Besides President Dr RK Bakshi, PDG Rakesh Agarwal, PP Dr SL Gupta, PP Rakesh Malhotra, PP Dr Tarun Bhatia, PP Joginder Singh, Rtn Parveen Kumar, etc., were present on the occasion.
