DEHRADUN, 28 Feb: On Thursday (Feb 26), a dispute had erupted between the Municipal Councillor and a sanitation worker in Ward No 38 of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (Doon Nagar Nigam), following which sanitation workers announced a boycott of sanitation work across all wards of the Municipal Corporation. Subsequently, the sanitation workers’ union submitted a memorandum on Friday, seeking that the matter be formally brought to the notice of the Government and appropriate action be initiated.
In connection with the incident, on Saturday the president of the Sanitation Workers’ Union Sonu Kherwal, Secretary Dheeraj Bharti, president of the Municipal Corporation Federation Satendra Kumar and Secretary Yogesh Anand called on Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal and Municipal Commissioner Namami Bansal. They demanding suitable action against the Municipal Councillor in the matter.
The Municipal Commissioner informed the representatives that a letter has already been sent to the government apprising it of the issue. She further stated that a proposal has also been forwarded for initiating necessary action towards framing a code of conduct for Municipal Corporation employees and Councillors, so that no such incident occurs in future in public interest and essential work is not disrupted.
Following the discussions, the employees’ union decided that, in view of the forthcoming Holi festival and the ensuing State Assembly session and in the interest of maintaining proper and effective sanitation arrangements in the city, the declared boycott of work is being withdrawn with immediate effect.
However, until the dispute between the Councillor and the concerned sanitation workers in Ward No 38 is resolved, the boycott of work in that particular ward shall continue as before. In all other wards, sanitation work will resume and be carried out regularly as earlier.
The Dehradun Municipal Corporation has assured citizens that all necessary steps are being taken to maintain cleanliness and sanitation arrangements across the city.
