Dehradun, 29 Oct: BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt today targeted the Congress over the date chosen for its proposed rally, alleging that the party’s history in both government and opposition has been marked by disorder and political opportunism.

Responding to media queries regarding the Congress’ proposed “Save the Constitution” rally in Delhi and the reported Uttarakhand visits of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Bhatt said there could have been no more appropriate date than 1 November for a party that, according to him, symbolises anarchic politics. He alleged that by choosing the date associated with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the Congress had reopened old wounds and reminded the country of a painful chapter in its history.

Launching a sharp attack on the opposition’s proposed march and demonstrations, Bhatt said the move is reminiscent of the turmoil witnessed in 1984. He claimed that after the assassination of a former Prime Minister, Congress leaders had sought revenge in a manner that damaged national unity and social harmony. Referring to the anti-Sikh riots, he alleged that thousands of Sikhs were killed during the violence and accused the Congress of being responsible for those events.

Bhatt further alleged that while claiming to protect the Constitution, the Congress is, in fact, engaged in efforts to weaken constitutional institutions. He accused the party of repeatedly attacking constitutional bodies and attempting to create an atmosphere against the democratic system. He also alleged that the Congress and other opposition parties were acting in a manner that served anti-national interests.

Targeting Rahul Gandhi, Bhatt claimed that his statements and political activities are often irresponsible and not in the national interest. He said that after suffering repeated electoral defeats, the Congress had resorted to negative politics and conspiratorial tactics.

Reacting to reports of the proposed visits of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to Uttarakhand, Bhatt said the people of the state do not take the two leaders seriously because of what he described as their anti-national and anti-Sanatan outlook. He further alleged that the Congress leadership had repeatedly attacked Uttarakhand’s self-respect and image. Taking a swipe at the Congress leadership, he said their visits ahead of electoral activity would not benefit the party and asserted that the more frequently such leaders visit Devbhoomi, the stronger the BJP’s support base would become in the state.
