NEW TEHRI/DEHRADUN, 30 Aug: A two-day STEM training workshop was organised at Government Inter College, Narendra Nagar, as part of a collaborative initiative by Shaurya Naman Welfare Society and ThinkTac, with financial support from the Uttarakhand State Council for Science & Technology (U-COST). The programme aims to strengthen science and mathematics education in government schools across Uttarakhand by equipping teachers with experiential and experimental teaching methodologies aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. A total of 76 teachers, teaching classes 6 to 8 in government schools, participated in the training.
During the workshop, each teacher was provided with a specially curated STEM kit comprising materials for four science and four mathematics activities. These hands-on activities were designed to encourage student engagement, foster curiosity, and promote inquiry-based learning in classrooms. The workshop focused on practical implementation of NEP 2020 principles, enabling teachers to adopt innovative pedagogical approaches that make science and mathematics more accessible and enjoyable for students.
Principal Researcher Ranjan noted that the initiative has significantly enhanced the confidence of participating teachers, equipping them to integrate experiential learning into their daily teaching practices. He emphasised that such interventions have the potential to transform the educational landscape in rural Uttarakhand by making learning more interactive and contextually relevant.
The direct beneficiaries of the workshop were the teachers, who now possess both the training and the tools to implement NEP-based teaching effectively. Indirectly, students stand to gain immensely, as the new approach will help them grasp scientific and mathematical concepts through real-life examples, thereby nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. The initiative is expected to contribute meaningfully to the development of a robust science and technology ecosystem in rural regions of the state.
The organisers have expressed intent to scale up the training model across Uttarakhand. Plans are underway to conduct refresher workshops, assess the impact of the programme, and extend similar training to teachers of other classes and subjects. The project, titled “Teachers’ Training Workshop for Teaching Science to Children Through Interesting and Fun Activities,” marks a commendable beginning in the journey towards implementing NEP 2020 through experiential STEM education. By training 76 teachers, the programme has laid a strong foundation for replicable, scalable, and impactful educational reform in the state.
