Take measures to ensure greater road safety in Doon: DM

Rs 20 lakhs allocated for road safety measures in Dehradun

Dehradun, 27 Nov: District Magistrate Savin Bansal today chaired a meeting with officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), National Highways (NH), and National Highways Infrastructure (NHI) at the Collectorate to discuss construction works. The DM issued strict instructions that road safety works should be proposed first, with other works given secondary priority.

Bansal emphasised that every life is precious and that the department should not treat road improvement instructions as a mere formality. He stressed that road safety should not be limited to setting up crash barriers, but proper road improvements must be implemented. In the meeting, the DM stressed that public safety is the top priority, and concrete arrangements must be made for road safety.

The DM directed the departments concerned to prepare the details of road safety works, which will be sent to the government for approval of funds. He insisted that important road safety works should be given top priority and instructed the departments to submit their proposals within the next two days.

During the meeting, NHM officials presented plans for elevated roads from Nepali Farm to Dal Wala and from Ajabpur to Mohkampur. Officials from NH Dehradun unit also shared information on road improvement works at Lehman Chowk, Badwala, and other areas. PWD officials shared information regarding completion of works from Kargi Chowk to Lalpur, and the District Magistrate sought proposals for further improvements at Kargi Chowk.

Following a joint inspection of the city by the District Magistrate and senior police officials, instructions were issued to improve intersections and facilitate public arrangements. The road safety meeting included directions to submit proposals for road improvement, intersection beautification, and traffic ease.

The meeting also discussed plans for underpasses and under-parking in the city, with instructions to prepare proposals soon. The DM directed the integration of intersection widening and road improvement works into road safety projects and submission of proposals for government funding. Proposals for installing crash barriers in various areas in the district were also invited soon.

In the meeting, the DM also announced plans to visit the field for road safety inspections and directed officials to start work on stop lines, zebra crossings, and other safety measures immediately. He reminded that an initial amount of Rs 20 lakhs has been allocated, with an additional Rs 15 lakhs to follow. He assured that road safety works will be prioritised, and there will be no shortage of funds. Following the DM’s instructions, the process of installing speed breakers to control vehicle speed has also been started. SE PWD Mukesh Singh Parmar, SE NH Deepak Gupta, SE PWD Rachna Thapliyal, SE PWD Praveen Kandwal, Navneet Pandey, ARTO Rajendra Viratiya, Assistant Engineer PWD KK Uniyal, and GS Kandal attended the meeting.
