Dehradun, 21 Nov: Uttarakhand has been awarded the Best State Award in the category of Himalayan and North-Eastern States by the National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, for its innovative experiments in the field of fisheries. The award was handed over to Secretary of Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, Uttarakhand, Dr BVRC Purushottam, by Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Dairy, and Panchayati Raj, Rajiv Ranjan Singh at a function organised in New Delhi on World Fisheries Day today.
It may be recalled that the Uttarakhand Fisheries Department has constructed more than 1,400 trout raceways in the state for trout farming. Additionally, a state-level aquapark and a wholesale market have been constructed in Udham Singh Nagar under the Matsya Sampada Yojana. The department has also signed a contract for supply of fish by local fish farmers’ groups to ITBP. All these initiatives are expected to increase the income of fish farmers in Uttarakhand. Due to these innovative efforts, the board has selected Uttarakhand for this prestigious award.
Commenting on the development, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today congratulated the department and fish farmers on the award and claimed that the government is continuously making numerous efforts to increase the income of farmers and those involved in animal husbandry. He added that the results of the continuous efforts being made by the government are now becoming visible.
