Dehradun, 5 Aug: Vice-Chancellor of Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Dr Manmohan Singh Chauhan met Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) at the Raj Bhavan here on Tuesday.

On this occasion, the Vice-Chancellor presented the Governor with a coffee table book, titled “Honey Revolution in Uttarakhand through Women Empowerment”, which provides insights into the research, training, and participation of rural women in beekeeping undertaken by the university over the past year.

The Governor stated that Uttarakhand’s natural environment and biodiversity are highly conducive to beekeeping. Connecting women with this activity will not only help them become self-reliant but also empower them further. The Governor highlighted that currently Uttarakhand produces about 12,000 metric tonnes of honey annually, whereas the state has the potential to increase production to 40,000–60,000 metric tonnes. This clearly indicates immense opportunities for growth in beekeeping.

The Governor further said that Uttarakhand’s honey possesses unique medicinal properties, which have been proven through research. He emphasised the need for a revolution in the field of beekeeping, which would provide a new dimension to the rural economy of the state and ensure substantial progress in social and economic empowerment.
