DEHRADUN, 24 Nov: The 16th Convocation of the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) was held at the Bidholi campus of the University today. The grand ceremony held in the jam-packed convocation center saw 3609 students from 72 diverse programs being conferred with their degrees. Baby Rani Maurya, the Governor of Uttarakhand presided over the ceremony as the Chief Guest.
Briefing the media, Arun Dhand – Sr. Director, Public Affairs shared that 48 PhD, 1372 Postgraduates & 2189 Undergraduates students were conferred degrees while 90 Student Achievers were felicitated with medals & shields in this Convocation.
Addressing the student in her Convocation Speech Maurya while appreciating the industry-specific education being imparted in UPES, also advised the graduating students to use the gained knowledge for the benefit of the Society & the Nation. The Chief Guest applauded the good work being done by the University for improving the lives of their neighboring rural community towards their Societal Responsibilities. The Governor counselled the students to be always thankful to their parents & teachers for it is they who have shaped them to what they are today. She laid emphasis on Discipline in Life which she said is always the key to success. She further advised the students that in todays’ day & age Convocation should never be considered as a ‘Milestone’ of culmination of knowledge but should be considered as a ‘stepping stone’ for further knowledge
In his ‘Commencement Address’ Sharad Mehra, Chairman – Hydrocarbons Education & Research Society (HERS – the Promoting Society of the University) while congratulating the graduating students and the Medal Winners also cautioned them that having a degree and having experience are two different things which they now need to balance. Mehra stated that whatever anyone does for a living, some element of contribution to the country must always be included in it. He made all the graduating students to rise and applaud for their parents & Gurus.
Dr. Deependra Kumar Jha, Vice Chancellor UPES in his report touched upon several aspects which included awards & recognitions, student accomplishments, faculty achievements, academic collaborations, Campus Placements, Human Resource initiatives, infrastructure, research & development, internationality and societal impact.
Greeting the dignitaries & guests in his welcome address earlier, Chancellor Dr SJ Chopra spoke about how UPES is rebooting Engineering, Management & Legal education through innovative interventions and new initiatives towards multidisciplinary approach in the domains of Energy, Transportation, and Infrastructure & Information Technology.
A total of 3609 students were awarded their respective Degrees at the convocation which included 48 PhD’s; 1372 Post Graduate Degrees which comprised of MBA, M.Tech, MA, LLM, M.Plan & M.Design and 2189 Undergraduate degrees in the domains of B.Tech, BBA, BA, B.Design & various UG programs of Law. 77 MBA Degrees were also conferred on Uttarakhand State Employees under the ‘Open/Distance’ Learning Mode which included 48 In Power management & 29 In Infrastructure Management.
07 Gold Medals, 66 Silver Medals, 03 Instituted Medals Gold and 14 Shields were awarded to the students during the ceremony. The achievers received their respective medals individually through the hands of the Chief Guest, Distinguished Guest & the Special Guest. Dr. Veena Dutta, Registrar UPES was the Master of Ceremony at the Convocation.
The 16th Convocation concluded with the declaration Convocation Closed by the Chief Guest. The Convocation ceremony registered a large number of attendance by the graduating students & their parents, Industry Leaders, UPES Faculty & staff of and the media fraternity.
Delivering the Vote of Thanks Deepa Verma, Sr. Director – Institutional Affairs expressed her gratitude to all the dignitaries on the Dias for their respective valuable time despite their tight schedules while also acknowledging the tireless efforts put in by each UPES family member towards the grand success of the Convocation. “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe” she said. She also highlighted that Alumni is the most precious asset that any University creates for itself, the society and the nation. She urged the graduating students to maintain their relationship with their Alma Mater while moving forward in their individual pursuits. The ceremony ended after the playing of the National Anthem melodiously by the Military Band.
