Haridwar, 17 Feb: The State level unit of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has strongly come out in support of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand, Addressing a key meeting of VHP on UCC at the state office of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Seth Muralimal Dharamshala, Upper Road, Haridwar, VHP State Organisation Secretary Ajay Kumar asserted that implementing the UCC would foster social harmony and enhance security of women.

Ajay Kumar emphasised that the UCC aims to uphold secularism by eliminating religious-based legal disparities. By reducing inequalities and conflicts stemming from diverse religious practices, the UCC seeks to promote gender equality, social justice, and national unity.

Kumar asserted that the UCC law would be implemented without discrimination based on religion, caste, or gender, ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all citizens. Stressing the urgency of nationwide implementation, he noted that Hindus respect their religion without harbouring animosity toward other beliefs. He also addressed challenges to the UCC, particularly concerning issues like marriages, divorce, iddat, and inheritance laws affecting a specific community, and observed that some have claimed that the UCC violates Article 25 of the Indian Constitution. Under Section 390, the UCC would abolish certain customs and practices within the Muslim community regarding these matters.

Ajay pointed out that while Hinduism has abolished harmful practices such as untouchability, polygamy remains permissible in certain other communities. While Hindu scriptures venerate women as goddesses, some “groups” continue to advocate for practices like polygamy, halala, and triple talaq. He stressed the need for civil law reforms and urged these communities to acknowledge and rectify outdated customs. He questioned the resistance to uniformity in personal laws when unity in diversity has been a core principle of India for centuries. He asserted that a nation governed by a constitution should uphold a uniform legal system for all personal matters, irrespective of the community or caste.

Ajay Kumar further stated that the constitution mandates the implementation of a uniform civil code for all citizens. He noted that, in Uttarakhand, establishing uniform legal systems, customs, and marriage laws would strengthen national unity and integrity. He reaffirmed that VHP has always safeguarded human rights rather than exploiting them, underscoring India’s longstanding commitment to advocating for the UCC.

Present at the meeting were state office chief Veersen Manav, Balram Kapoor, Bhupendra Saini, Prajeet, Kamal Uniyal, Gopal Bhardwaj, Ajay Joshi, Sonu Kumar, Deepak Talian, Rohit Shastri, and several other workers.
