DEHRADUN, 2 May: The proposed opening of a wine shop on Canal Road, a posh area of the city located near the rear gate of Rashtrapati Niketan, has been cancelled. The district administration’s decision district has brought cheer and a sense of relief to the local residents, especially women of the area, who expressed gratitude to Cabinet Minister Ganesh Joshi.
Following vociferous protests and demonstrations by local residents on Wednesday, a team comprising the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Judicial), officials from the Excise Department, and the district administration reached the site. The officials informed residents that the wine shop would not be allowed to open on Canal Road.
The administration clarified that the decision was taken keeping in mind public sentiment as well as the presence of Rashtrapati Niketan, schools, and other educational institutions in the vicinity.
It may be recalled that in the past few days, local residents—particularly women—had been continuously protesting against the proposal to open a wine shop in the area. During this time, Joshi personally visited the site and assured the residents, especially the women, that their concerns would be respected and that the liquor shop would not be allowed to open.
