Haldwani (Nainital), 25 Mar: A tragic road accident occurred near Kamluwaganja on Kaladhungi Road in the Mukhani police station area here, where a speeding truck collided with a bike, killing the rider, his son, and another child. Upon receiving information about the incident, police rushed to the scene and took the injured to the hospital. However, doctors declared all three dead upon examination. The truck driver has been taken into custody.

According to the police, the deceased, originally from Uttar Pradesh, lived in the Haripur Nayak area under the Mukhani police station jurisdiction and worked as a sharecropper. The victims have been identified as Jai Singh, his 15-year-old son, and another child from the neighbourhood.

Eyewitnesses reported that Jai Singh was returning home with his son and the neighbour’s child after purchasing school stationery when their bike was struck by the speeding truck near Kamluwaganja. The impact of the accident was so severe that all three lost their lives on the spot.

Following the incident, police from Mukhani police station arrived at the location, seized the truck, and apprehended the driver. Legal proceedings have been initiated, and the bodies have been sent for postmortem. Meanwhile, grief and chaos have engulfed Jai Singh’s family. Local residents have voiced concerns over recurring accidents, attributing them to inadequate enforcement against speeding and overloading by the trucks. It may be recalled that in the past few years, there has been a sharp hike in serious road accidents involving speeding trucks, mostly carrying mining material. These trucks can even be spotted within the city during the day when according to the rules, entry of trucks is generally not permissible within municipal boundaries. The residents claim that violations by the mining trucks are deliberately ignored by the police and the administration which remain either lax in taking action or are in connivance with the mining mafia.
