Dehradun, 17 Mar: A group of youth volunteers from Graphic Era Deemed to be University and Graphic Era Hill University, Dehradun, under the leadership of YUWA Changemakers Prithvi, Jayana, Prakriti Rawat, and Kashish, conducted a Clean-Up Drive and Dark Spot Transformation (DST) today at a Garbage Vulnerable Point in the Clement Town Cantonment area, here.
The initiative was carried out as part of the YUWA Movement by Waste Warriors Society, with active facilitation and support from Riya Chaudhary, Avadesh Pundir, and Oceanika Bhatt.
As part of the transformation effort, 73 student volunteers, primarily from the NSS groups of the two universities, participated in the clean-up drive. Through their collective efforts, a total of 526 kilograms of waste was removed, leading to the successful transformation of the site from a garbage vulnerable point into a cleaner public space.
The activity was conducted in collaboration with the Clement Town Cantonment Board and with support from the Forest Department, Dehradun. A significant role in enabling the initiative was played by Ankita Singh, CEO of the Cantonment Board, whose support helped facilitate the transformation process. One of the active citizens from the surrounding community, Kamla Dhyani, NSS Head from SGRR University, also contributed significantly to the execution of the initiative.
Along with the physical clean-up of the site, a team of volunteers visited nearby residential areas to inform community members about the transformation initiative and encourage responsible waste disposal practices. A signboard was installed at the location clearly stating a Rs 5000 fine for dumping waste, reinforcing the message that the area must now be maintained as a clean and shared community space. This effort was further supported by Deepak Negi and Sudhir Thapa, Parshads of Clement Town and Ward No. 70, respectively.
The initiative demonstrates how youth leadership and community participation can play a powerful role in addressing local waste challenges and transforming neglected spaces into responsible public areas.
The YUWA Movement by Waste Warriors Society continues to empower young people to take action on waste and climate issues through community engagement, leadership development, and on-ground environmental initiatives.
