Dehradun, 5 Mar: Tension prevailed in the Laxman Chowk area under Kotwali Nagar police station limits in Dehradun after some Muslim youths allegedly assaulted a woman vegetable vendor last evening. Following the incident, the atmosphere in the locality turned tense and a case has been registered against unidentified accused persons.
The alleged victim, Laxmi Devi Sonkar stated that she was sitting at her shop when a youth aged around 16–17 years, from the Muslim community, purchased some fruit and left. After some time, he returned and allegedly began abusing her. It is alleged that the youth threw the fruit at her and attacked her, slapped her and also threatened to kill her. When she protested, he pushed her towards the road and fled from the spot.
The complainant further alleged that the accused had earlier also assaulted her mother, but no legal action had been taken at that time. On the basis of the complaint, a case has been registered against Salim, a resident of Shiv Nagar Colony on Kanwali Road. After the incident, the atmosphere in the area became quite heated, following which police personnel had to be deployed to maintain law and order.
As the argument escalated, the two sides began abusing and quarrelling with each other, following which people from both communities gathered at the spot and the situation became tense.
On receiving information, the police personnel from the Laxman Chowk outpost and Kotwali Nagar police station immediately reached the spot and pacified both sides, bringing the situation under control. According to the police, a case has been registered at Kotwali Nagar on the basis of the complaint of the aggrieved party. Further legal action is being taken. The police stated that the situation in the area is presently normal and the matter is under investigation.
