Climbing the Metaphysical Mountain:

By Alok Joshi

In an intellectual landscape often dominated by fast-paced narratives and surface-level prose, a gathering of the city’s finest minds at the Doon Library and Research Centre served as a reminder of the enduring power of deep thought. The occasion was the release of “That Thou Art: The Unknown Dimensions”, a profound new book by former bureaucrat and seasoned author Indu Pande.

The launch was followed by an intense, thought-provoking panel discussion featuring noted author and commentator Dr Sanjeev Chopra, with a brilliant final synthesis delivered by N Ravi Shankar, Director of the Doon Library and Research Centre.

The Author’s Courage: Tackling a Dense Terrain

That Thou Art is admittedly not a light weekend read; it is a dense, deeply philosophical work aimed strictly at mature and introspective readers. Rooted firmly in the heavy soil of Vedanta philosophy, the narrative weaves the timeless richness of Indian contemplative traditions into a contemporary framework. As an author myself, I cannot help but deeply admire Indu Pande’s courage in picking such an intensely complicated and layered subject. It is a bold creative choice that demands both immense scholarly rigor and a deep spiritual sensitivity.

The plot, set against the backdrop of 1972, follows a main protagonist who was just a child when the horrific Munich Olympics massacre occurred—an event that left a profound, lasting trauma on her psyche. Growing up to become a highly trained psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, she is thoroughly well-versed in Western traditions, psychology, and philosophy. Yet, despite her formidable education, a devastating confusion rages in her mind: How can pure evil co-exist in a fair world?

When Western analytical frameworks fail to provide answers to this existential angst, her quest for truth brings her to the spiritual heart of India.

A Mountain to Climb, a View to Behold

Opening the discussion, Dr Sanjeev Chopra perfectly captured the challenging yet rewarding nature of the text in his inimitable simple language. To quote him, “Reading this book is like climbing a tough hill. The trek is exhausting, but the view at the top is recompense for the effort.”

The author expertly guided the audience through the book’s complex labyrinth, where Western philosophical titans like Plato, Kant, and Jung meet the ancient seers of India. A key highlight of the discussion was how the book bridges Kant’s “Categorical Imperative” with the Gita’s concept of Nishkama Karma—performing one’s duty without attachment to the outcome.

Importantly, the author himself confesses that That Thou Art is not a book of definitive conclusions. Rather, it is a book of deep exploration—a continuous journey of seeking rather than a rigid destination.

What makes Indu Pande’s work remarkably unique is its bold attempt to harmonise the ontological and the epistemological. It challenges the reader to look past static material realities and view the universe as a continuous movement conditioned by space and time.

The Convergence of Physics and Philosophy

Summing up the evening’s deliberations, N Ravi Shankar brought the lofty metaphysical concepts down to a beautifully resonant conclusion. Drawing a bridge between modern scientific inquiry and ancient spirituality, he aptly noted:

“When a physicist seeks answers to philosophical questions, he finds a beautiful resonance between the core principles of physics and the underpinnings of philosophy.”

The packed auditorium at the Doon Library, comprising prominent citizens, writers, and intellectuals, bore testament to the fact that Dehradun remains a fertile ground for high-level literary discourse. For mature readers willing to undertake this intellectual climb, Indu Pande’s exploratory work promises a transformative view of the self and the cosmos.
