Dehradun, 7 Aug: The rapid melting of Himalayan glaciers threatens nearly 2 billion people by causing severe water shortages, extreme flooding, and damaged infrastructure, according to Alok Sinha, former Chief Secretary, UP.
Also, the glaciers’ threat in Gomukh, the origin of the Ganga, needs immediate attention, he adds. According to reliable estimate the glaciers will melt by 2050, causing a cascading effect on waters in the rivers.
According to him, Tehri MLA Kishore Upadhay is organising a conference of all stake holders, including those from the scientific community, to discuss the threat and strive for a blue print for the protection of glaciers in Uttarakhand.
Sinha is on a visit to Dehradun and was at the Natraj Bookstore today. He spoke to some book lovers and concerned citizens and said he would join Kishore Upadhay and contribute to the success of the conference to be held in Tehri from 8 September.
