Deliberations on Innovative Sustainable Agriculture held at GEHU

Dehradun, 29 Nov: On the last day of the International Conference at GEU here, today, experts deliberated on strategies to integrate innovation in agricultural practices.

This international conference was organised on Innovative Sustainable Agriculture & Livestock Technologies. Today, Director, Uttarakhand Science Education and Research Centre, Prof Anita Rawat while addressing the conference as the Chief Guest said that the environment of hilly areas is self-sustaining. The people living here have limited needs. However, if the limits are crossed while using natural resources, major challenges like disasters are likely to occur.

She said that children should be encouraged to develop critical thinking from an early age. This way students will be able to play a crucial role in providing solutions for various societal problems. Experts from European Bioinformatics Institute, United Kingdom, Dr Jorge Batista da Rocha and Dr Louisse Paolo Mirabueno appreciated university’s arrangements.

In the 5-day international conference, experts during the technical sessions taught students about various topics such as role of genomics and computational biology in microbial studies, genomic tool for conservation of climate resilient tree varieties, importance of traditional farming, crop diversification to improving soil health and sahiwal cattle. These experts included Dr Sucheta Tripathi, Dr Modhumita Dasgupta, Dr RK Gautam, Dr Lekh Chand, Dr Shive Kumar and Dr Priyank Vyas.

As many as 120 research papers and posters were presented during the conference. In the paper presentation competition, Namini Joshi, Dr Bijeta and Dr Maansi were awarded the first prize in different themes. Parvati Thapa, Daylaboya Lukram and Shaik Thair Basha bagged the first position in different themes of poster presentations.

Dr Parul Chaudhary and Dr Pallavi Joshi were honoured with the Young Women Scientist Award.

The International Conference was organised by Graphic Era Hill University’s School of Agriculture. Convener and Dean Dr MK Nautiyal, Organising Secretary and HOD Dr Arvind Singh Negi, Founder Chairman of Society for Plant Research Dr SK Bhatnagar along with Dr Deepak Kholiya, Dr Vivek Pathak and Dr Anita Singh were present at the conference. Dr Balwant Rawat hosted the valedictory session.
