Mussoorie, 25 Sep: Frequent incidents of land subsidence in the Jharipani area of Mussoorie have raised concerns among local residents as well as the district administration. Following heavy rainfall on 15 September, the pace of subsidence in the area has accelerated, raising concerns about the safety of not only the trekking route but also the surrounding settlements. As soon as media reports about this situation surfaced, the administration initiated swift and well-planned action. Upon the instructions of the Dehradun District Magistrate, a high-level joint team comprising geologists, the Public Works Department, the Tourism Department, the Municipal Corporation, and other technical experts was formed to thoroughly inspect the Jhadipani toll and the trek route.
Jhadipani is one of Mussoorie’s popular trekking routes and is an essential access point for both tourists and local residents. Recent rainfall has brought excessive moisture to the soil, causing cracks in the ground and visible signs of subsidence in several locations.
SDM, Mussoorie, Rahul Anand stated that subsidence has been confirmed in the track route and Jharipani toll area. Following this, a joint team has initiated a ground inspection of the entire area. Where access was impossible, aerial surveys were conducted using drones. This technological approach was adopted to ensure that no affected area was overlooked. SDM Anand stated that the team will submit its detailed report within the next 48 hours, based on which necessary steps will be taken after receiving instructions from higher authorities. The SDM clarified that treatment work will begin soon to prevent any major accidents in the Jharipani area. This will include measures such as increasing soil stability, controlling water flow, and installing warning signs in dangerous areas. The state government and district administration intend to not only address the current threat but also develop a permanent solution to prevent such incidents in the future.
The Jharipani area holds a special place on Mussoorie’s tourist map. District Tourism Officer Vijendra Pandey stated that a large amount of debris and boulders had fallen on the Jharipani trek, blocking the route. However, his team has now inspected the route, and cleaning and repair work will begin soon. He stated that the goal is to make this trek safe and attractive for tourists again, thereby boosting both local tourism and employment.
Local residents of Jharipani, Pradeep Bhandari and Mukul Thapliyal, praised the administration’s prompt action. They said, “Now we have hope that our land and homes will be safe. We have been struggling with this problem for years, but now, with the administrative action, we see a ray of relief.” According to geologists, lack of drainage in hill areas, indiscriminate cutting of trees and plants, and continuous rainfall are the major causes of land subsidence. If geological studies and treatment are not conducted in time in trekking areas like Jharipani, it could lead to an environmental and humanitarian crisis. The joint team’s survey is also looking at what types of permanent engineering structures can be built in the future to ensure the safety of the trek route and residential areas.

Municipal President Meera Saklani, Mussoorie BJP Mandal President Rajat Agarwal, and local people were also present on this occasion.
