Dehradun/Mussoorie, 12 Nov: Noted academic and literary critic and author Satish Aikant (76) passed away yesterday, leaving behind a rich intellectual legacy and a deep void in the world of literature and scholarship. His mortal remains were consigned to flames in Haridwar today in the presence of family, friends, and admirers. He is survived by his wife Rajni and son, Rajat Aikant Sharma.
According to the bereaved family, he was in Dehradun and expired after his morning walk yesterday morning due to cardiac arrest. His mortal remains were brought to Mussoorie and today cremated in Haridwar.
Satish Aikant, a distinguished scholar from Uttarakhand, was Professor and former Head of the Department of English at HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar (Garhwal), where he also served as Director of the School of Languages. A highly respected figure in academic and literary circles, he was regarded as one of the foremost critical voices in postcolonial and cultural studies in India.
A long-time resident of Mussoorie, Aikant was deeply connected to the cultural and intellectual life of the hill town and was a regular contributor to Garhwal Post. His writings reflect a deep engagement with issues of identity, environment, and the socio-cultural evolution of the Himalayan region.
Aikant’s contributions to postcolonial studies, literary criticism, and cultural theory have been acknowledged nationally and internationally. His essays and critiques have appeared in several reputed journals, and he has been a frequent speaker at seminars and literature festivals like Valley of Words on literature, society, and environment.
Aikant’s son Rajat is also a Garhwal Post columnist.
