Dehradun, 9 Oct: Thanks to the efforts of Agriculture Minister Ganesh Joshi, farmers will soon receive crop insurance payments under the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme. During a meeting at his camp office, officials from CBI Agriculture General Insurance informed the minister that insurance claims for apple crops that were cancelled in December-January (2023-24) would soon be processed.
Officials from SBI General Insurance explained that technical errors in documentation had prevented farmers from receiving benefits. They noted that Joshi had written to Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan requesting the reopening of the government portal to facilitate re-insurance for the apple crops. Following this, the government directed swift action for the payment of crop insurance to farmers.
Minister Joshi thanked Union Minister Chouhan and emphasized that the produce is vital to farmers. He instructed the insurance officials to prioritize farmers’ interests and ensure that those affected by technical errors are quickly compensated under the scheme. The discussion also included plans for a parametric insurance solution for disaster risk transfer, similar to that in Nagaland.
It is noteworthy that farmers from Naogaon, Purola, and Mori blocks in Uttarkashi, as well as Nainital, had previously raised this issue with Minister Ganesh Joshi, highlighting that their insurance claims had been canceled. Last month, the minister directed the insurance company officials to resolve this issue.
Present at the meeting were Chief Business Officer Rakesh Kaul, National Head Piyush Kumar Singh, State Manager Rupak Bisht, Regional Manager Parmanand Sharma, amongst others.
