DEHRADUN, 14 Oct: The Medical Council of India (MCI) team was here today to conduct an inspection of Doon Medical College, which is now in the process of running PG courses in Medical Sciences. According to College sources, two teams were here to conduct a “surprise” inspection. Sources, however, conceded that they were expecting the inspection of the Medical College by the MCI. Sources further indicated that the MCI teams have given certain directions to the College administration and were not happy with the incomplete construction work on various buildings in the College campus, though the works relating to the under construction A Block are in the final stage and it is likely to be inaugurated soon. In addition, the College has presently only a capacity of 519 beds, while, for a PG college, the minimum requirement of bed capacity is 650. The College is already starting the process of introducing PG courses from the next academic session. It is not going to be easy to raise the bed capacity to 650 by then, sources admit. Of course, it is a normal practice among the medical colleges to project and claim better facilities, which are sometimes hired or installed temporarily during the MCI inspections. Even the faculty positions remaining vacant are sometimes shown as filled up during the inspections. It is a matter of common knowledge that diagnostic and therapeutic equipment installed in the Doon Medical College hospital has already completed the designated lifecycle and needs replacement. It regularly undergoes breakdowns but is not repaired in time resulting in patients being referred to private diagnostic centres and ending up spending significant amounts of money. This happens on a regular basis. Medical Superintendent Dr KK Tamta was present during the inspection. The Medical College administration has claimed that the MCI teams were satisfied with the facilities in the College and expressed the hope that the college would soon get clearance from the MCI to run the PG courses. It may be recalled that Doon Medical College was established some years ago by converting the Doon Hospital into a medical college. Doon Hospital was the best district hospital in the state and had got a special boost in terms of infrastructure and facilities during the time when the present Union Minister RP Nishank was the state health minister. However, it now stands converted into the only government medical college in Dehradun, which remains without a district hospital over the past few years as a result.
