Dehradun, 2 May: An important state level meeting of the BJP was held under the leadership of State President Mahendra Bhatt with MPs, MLAs and other public representatives regarding the party’s preparations for the upcoming civic elections. At the meeting, it was decided to give priority to selecting candidates through consensus and to bring local development issues at the centre of discussion in public.

Addressing the virtual meeting conducted from the party headquarters, State President Mahendra Bhatt made it clear that it will be the party’s target to win all the municipal elections. He reminded that the electoral process for the civil elections has been affected due to discrepancies found in the voters’ lists. In view of this, on the suggestion of the party and other parties, the Commission is organising a week-long camp for reforms. Bhatt called upon the party leaders and workers to make sincere efforts to get all the eligible voters in the voters’ lists. He instructed the local cell of the party to be fully acquainted with the structure of the booths for the civil polls since their structure is different from that of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Adjustments should be made in the structure of the booth committees accordingly. During this, he also urged all the MLAs to sincerely coordinate with the organisation and complete this entire process as soon as possible.

Regarding the selection of party candidates, Bhatt emphasised that observers will soon be appointed and sent to the districts. But even before that, everyone should discuss the names of good candidates keeping in mind the representation of sections like SC, ST, OBC, women, etc. The effort should be to ensure that names come forward unanimously after detailed discussion. Committees should be formed and meetings held by the office bearers at the level of wards and divisions, he emphasised. He clarified that it is mandatory for everyone to apply for candidature. After detailed discussion, the final decision on the panel of names decided by the admission committee will be taken by the State Parliamentary Board.

Bhatt said that, apart from the historic achievements of the Central and State Governments, the party needs to highlight the large-scale local development work done in the past five years among the public. Local issues have to be the main subject of discussion in media, social media and public mediums.

State General Secretary Organisation Ajaey Kumar clarified the doubts of party office bearers regarding the civic elections. He said that the party has to continue the hard work done in the Lok Sabha elections till the civic elections and this includes forming booth committees and improving the voters’ list as a campaign.  This will need coordination from the booth to the state level.
