Car falls into gorge in Almora’s Lamgara area, 4 killed, 2 injured

Almora, 29 Jun: A road accident in the Lamgara area in district Almora claimed four lives and left two others seriously injured today. The devastating mishap occurred on the Chaikhan–Baliya Begenia motor road when a car reportedly went out of control and plunged into a deep gorge, shattering the happiness of four families in a single moment.

According to the information received so far, the vehicle suddenly lost control while negotiating the hill stretch and fell into a steep gorge. The impact was so severe that the car was completely mangled. Passers-by immediately alerted the police upon witnessing the accident.

On receiving information, a police team rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. Lamgara SHO Pramod Pathak stated that the rescue work was highly challenging due to the difficult and remote terrain. However, through well-coordinated efforts, all the occupants trapped inside the vehicle were extricated. By the time they were brought out, four of the occupants had already succumbed to their injuries on the spot. Two other persons sustained serious injuries and were rescued and sent to hospital for treatment.

It has been learnt that a total of six persons were travelling in the ill-fated vehicle. Of these, four died at the scene, while two were critically injured. The accident has cast a pall of gloom over the entire area, with the families of the deceased reported to be in deep shock and grief.

The deceased have been identified as Rajendra Singh Bilwal, aged 40, son of Narayan Singh and a resident of village Baliya under Lamgara police station in Almora district; Jagdish Singh, aged 35, son of Lachham Singh and a resident of the same village; Lachham Singh, aged 56, son of Pratap Singh and a resident of village Baliya; and Pan Singh, aged 55, son of Bishan Singh, also a resident of village Baliya in Lamgara area.

At the same time, the injured have been identified as Gopal Singh, aged 45, son of Khim Singh and a resident of village Baliya under Lamgara police station; and Sachin Singh Bilwal, aged 18, son of Rajendra Singh Bilwal and a resident of the same village.

SSP, Almora, Chandrashekhar R Ghode confirmed the incident and stated that four persons lost their lives in the accident, while two sustained injuries. The police have taken the bodies into custody and sent them for post-mortem examination. A detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances that led to the accident. Prima facie, it appears that the vehicle went out of control and fell into the gorge. However, the exact cause will be known only after completion of the investigation.
