COE-SLM, ICFRE, begins training prog on Assessing Land Degradation Dynamics

Dehradun, 15 Jan: The Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Land Management under ICFRE, Dehradun, started a five-day long international training programme on “Assessing Land Degradation Dynamics and Restoration Efforts with Remote Sensing Data and GIS Tools” today.  The training is being organised in collaboration with UNCCD-G20 GLI. Together, the CoE-SLM, ICFRE and UNCCD-G20 GLI, strive to contribute to solutions on land degradation across borders.

The training programme was inaugurated by Kanchan Devi, Director General, ICFRE. After welcoming the international participants, she highlighted the application of RS-GIS tools for understanding land degradation dynamics and formulating restoration strategies.

Vinay Kumar, Director, COE-SLM; Dr Rajesh Sharma, Head, COE-SLM; Dr Sudhir Kumar, DDG (Extension); Dr Ratnakar Johri, DDG (Research), ADGs and Scientists of ICFRE were present at the inaugural session of the training. Eighteen participants from 16 countries are attending the training programme.

Eminent experts as resource persons from institutions like NRSC, SAC, UNCCD, IIRS, IIT-Kharagpur will share their experience and expertise during the five-day training. The training also includes a hands-on session on satellite image interpretation to detect different land cover and collaborative field exercise on the case-study of land restoration undertaken by Uttarakhand Forest Department will be undertaken.

This training is a testament to the collective commitment of nations towards sustainable land management and land degradation neutrality. This training will equip participants with a holistic understanding of RS-GIS applications in land resources assessment.
