Dehradun, 10 Sep: At the Congress Bhawan here today, the Congress workers today remembered Bharat Ratna awardee, freedom fighter, and the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, on his birth anniversary, and paid homage to Veer Abdul Hamid on his death anniversary, by offering their floral tributes.

Paying tribute to Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, Congress MP and Central Observer appointed for organisational development in Dehradun Mahanagar, Manikam Tagore, observed that late GB Pant had made a significant contribution to the country’s freedom struggle. Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant had played a central role in the politics of Uttar Pradesh and India for 20 years after independence and had held posts like Chief Minister of UP and the country’s Home Minister. Pant was a man of unique talent and courage. His unforgettable contribution to the freedom struggle and his role in opposing the Simon Commission are etched in golden letters on the pages of history. He said that great personalities like Pant will always remain a source of inspiration for society. He also stated that Indians will always remember the indomitable courage of Veer Abdul Hamid in the India-Pakistan war.

Former MLA and Mahanagar Observer Ranjit Singh Rawat said that, in the third decade of the 20th century, Pant began his social and political life through the Kumaon Parishad. He deeply felt the pain of the weaker sections suffering in the mountainous regions due to rampant poverty, the Coolie Begaar system, and social evils, and over time, he undertook many struggles for them. During Pant’s Chief Ministership, the (Kunja) Act was passed for agricultural reforms. He delivered many profound speeches on important complex issues, including one regarding the freedom of the press which continued for two consecutive days in the Assembly, forcing the British government to withdraw the bill imposing restrictions on press freedom. He stated that great personalities like Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant will always remain a source of inspiration for society. To realise his dream for India’s construction, we must play our part; that will be our true tribute to him.
