DEHRADUN, 28 Dec: The DAV (PG) College Alumni Association remembered Mirza Ghalib on his 222nd birth anniversay at 1 Inder Road in association with the Uttaranchal Urdu Academy. It was a packed evening at which a galaxy of Urdu and Hindi poets recited poems in honour of Mirza Ghalib, both, from his works and others. The celebrations were presided over by Brig KG Behl (Retd) along with Dr S Farooq, the Patron of the Association.
Abdul Rab recalled the life and times of Mirza Ghalib, born in 1797 in Agra. He breathed his last in Delhi around 1865. Rab also quoted some of his famous couplets that have become part of public memory. He specially mentioned the letters written in Urdu language which gave a great impetus to the development of the language. Mirza Ghalib wrote in Persian (Farsi) as well.
Another special feature of this celebration was the presence of Sandhya Singh, a highly decorated poetess of repute from Lucknow. On behalf of the association, she was welcomed and introduced by Dolly Dabral, a literary figure of Doon, to the audience.
Amber Kharbanda, a well-known literary figure of Doon also recalled the life and writings of Mirza Ghalib. Ghalib attained most of his glory through his education and writings while working in Delhi. His pension at that time was Rs 62 and 8 annas.
The poets present on the occasion were Ranjeeta Falak, Abdul Rab, Prof Pramod Bharti, Imtiaz, Shauhar Jalalabadi, Satish Bansal, AS Bhatia, Munish Saxena, Neeti Saxena, Tariq, Dolly Dabral, Jasbeer Singh Haldar and Mr Kharbanda.
All the poems and ghazals reflected the human values and message of humanity spread by Mirza Ghalib. The Ghalib Day celebrations under the theme, Ghalib and Ganga-Jamni Tehzeeb, were also attended by Past President RK Bakshi, Mohd Nasir, Dr MS Ansari, President Dr Himmat Singh and Naghma Farooq. Inamul Haque Ramji compered the programme along with Ranjeeta Falak.
