Mussoorie, 12 Jul: Amidst incessant rainfall, a landslide on the main Dehradun-Mussoorie highway late Sunday night once again caused difficulties for travellers. Around midnight, a large volume of boulders and debris suddenly tumbled onto the road near Hanuman Temple, completely blocking the Mussoorie-Dehradun route. As soon as the road was obstructed, long queues of vehicles formed on both sides, forcing tourists and locals alike to wait late into the night for the road to reopen.
According to reports, a section of the hillside near Hanuman Temple—beyond Galogi Hill—gave way due to heavy rain, sending a large amount of debris and rocks crashing onto the road. Fortunately, no vehicles were directly struck by the falling debris at the time, averting a major accident. However, the road closure left several four-wheelers and two-wheelers stranded mid-journey.
Upon receiving the information, a Public Works Department (PWD) team arrived at the scene with a JCB machine. Workers carried out clearance operations for about an hour, removing the scattered debris and large boulders. Subsequently, the route was reopened to traffic, and the movement of vehicles stranded on both sides gradually returned to normal.
Mussoorie SDM Rahul Anand stated that the administration remains fully alert in view of the continuous rainfall and weather department warnings. JCB machines have been pre-positioned at landslide-prone locations to ensure immediate action and rapid road clearance should any debris fall. Relevant departments have been instructed to remain on high alert around the clock. The risk of landslides has increased in Mussoorie and surrounding areas due to the ongoing rain. The administration has appealed to tourists and locals to avoid unnecessary travel during inclement weather, exercise caution on hill roads, and adhere to the advisories issued by the administration.
