Compulsory registration of pet dogs emphasised

Dehradun, 5 Sep: In compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court, District Magistrate Dr Ashish Chauhan today held a meeting with officials regarding the effective management of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) and Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV) programme, as well as the regulation of stray and domestic cattle. He instructed the municipal bodies to conduct a detailed survey of stray animals and dogs, compile comprehensive data and upload it on the designated portal. He emphasised that based on authentic data, sterilisation, vaccination and other necessary facilities should be systematically provided to control the stray dog population.
The DM directed that the ABC and ARV campaigns be implemented effectively and stressed on the compulsory registration of pet dogs. He asked for early completion of land selection in Doiwala, Vikasnagar and Rishikesh for sterilisation and surgical facilities for dogs. He also ordered the municipal bodies to act promptly for the protection and management of stray cattle, ensuring that they are immediately shifted to kanji houses for proper care. He warned that strict punitive action would be taken against those found abandoning cattle on the roads.
Senior Veterinary Officer, Dr Varun Agrawal informed during the meeting that 55,487 stray dogs have been sterilised so far in the Dehradun Municipal Corporation area. At present, 72 dog kennels have been constructed, while work on 144 more is in progress, which will provide capacity for about 300 dogs once completed. Twenty-five dog feeding spots have been set up for stray dogs, and 1,117 licences have been issued for pet dogs.
It was also shared that at present, 347 stray cattle are housed at the Kedarpuram kanji house, while 536 are being cared for at the Shankarpur facility in Selaqui, totalling 883. Quick Response Teams with four animal transport vehicles have also been deployed to catch stray animals. It was also reported that since March 2026, 109 monkeys have been caught in the Dehradun municipal area and safely released into the forest.
Among those present at the meeting included ADM (Admin) KK Mishra, SDM Aparna Dhoundiyal, Senior Veterinary Officer Dr Varun Agrawal, MNA Vijay Nath Shukla and the executive officers of all the municipal bodies in the districts.
