Dehradun, 5 Jun: On the occasion of World Environment Day, a letter has been written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by several noted environmentalists and activists, seeking carbon labelling of all commercial products to be made mandatory.

This letter dated today, follows a decision reached at a round table conference on carbon footprint which was jointly organised by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and the Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation in New Delhi on 2 June. The meeting brought together environmentalists, scientists, legal experts, academicians, social leaders and policy stakeholders to deliberate on innovative measures for addressing climate change and promoting sustainable lifestyles.

Padma Bhushan awardee and noted environmentalist Dr Anil P Joshi (Founder HESCO), Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary of IGNCA, Shekhar Mande, President of the Indian National Science Academy, Sunil Rai, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Justice Sangita Dhingra, Anil Sagar of Jal Prahari, Priyanka Kaushal of IIT Delhi, Ved Prakash of the University of Delhi, environmental activists Pankaj Malviya and Pawan Singh, Abhay Mishra, convenor of Nadi Utsav, and Rambabu, water activist were among those who participated.

During the meeting, a broad consensus was reached on the need to empower citizens with environmental information that can guide responsible consumption and production practices. It was strongly recommended that India introduce a mandatory carbon footprint declaration system for all commercial products sold in the country. It was emphasised that similar to nutritional labelling on food items, carbon footprint disclosure would enable consumers to understand the environmental impact associated with the manufacture, transportation and use of products.

The experts also observed that consumer choices significantly influence carbon emissions and environmental sustainability, and greater transparency would encourage responsible consumption. Industries would be incentivised to adopt cleaner technologies and sustainable production processes, while such labelling would also support India’s commitments towards climate action and sustainable development. Public awareness regarding environmental responsibility could be strengthened through this mechanism.

The conference further emphasised the importance of promoting ecological lifestyles, reducing wasteful consumption, encouraging organic and local products, and integrating traditional sustainable practices into modern development models. It was also noted that while organisations such as the Delhi Metro and a few clothing brands have already begun mentioning the carbon footprint of their products and services, a legal mandate would ensure wider adoption and greater impact.

The appeal addressed to the Prime Minister highlights that India can emerge as a global leader in climate-conscious consumption by pioneering a comprehensive framework for carbon footprint disclosure. Such a policy would complement the vision of Lifestyle for Environment (LIFE) and contribute meaningfully to achieving national and global sustainability goals. The organisers expressed their willingness to share detailed recommendations with the concerned ministries and requested an appointment with the Prime Minister to present their suggestions in person.

The letter concluded with sincere regards and best wishes for the Prime Minister’s continued leadership in advancing environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
