Dehradun, 16 Aug: Drishti Eye Institute recently hosted a groundbreaking cataract surgery session from its OTs for the All India Ophthalmologists Society—dubbed as a “Surginar”. This innovative event not only captivated a vast audience of medical professionals and students but also provided the general public with unprecedented insights into complex surgical procedures through high-definition video streaming.

The Surginar was streamed live from the operation theatres at Drishti to over 33,000 member eye surgeons of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS), showcasing a series of intricate surgeries performed by esteemed ophthalmologists. Leading the event was Dr Gaurav Luthra, Director and Chief of Cataract Surgery at Drishti Eye Institute, alongside senior consultants Dr Gyanendra V Singh and Dr Amardeep Kaur. Their collective expertise was elevated by cutting-edge technologies including AI-assisted, image-guided Robotic surgery, which represents a significant leap forward in cataract treatment.

Drishti Eye Institute is distinguished not only for its surgical capabilities but also for its pioneering efforts in laser-assisted surgery over the past 10 years. Moreover, it stands as the first institute in Dehradun to introduce advanced glaucoma surgery options such as iStent and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS).

The high-profile event featured an expert panel comprising luminaries in the field, including Dr Namrata Sharma, a professor of ophthalmology at the RP Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi, and the chairperson of the AIOS scientific committee. Another prominent figure present was Dr Merle Fernandes, a senior surgeon and director at LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. Their participation underscored the event’s credibility and relevance in the ever-evolving landscape of ocular surgery.

Adding to the event’s allure were intriguing case presentations that highlighted the versatility of contemporary cataract surgery techniques. These included discussions on refractive Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs and Femto-Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS), further illustrating the ongoing innovation within the specialty. Due to the latest technology of IOL’s, patients now have the benefit of being able to get spectacles free vision at all distances including riding, reading and working on the computer.

Looking to the future, Drishti Eye Institute remains committed to continuing similar educational initiatives under the visionary leadership of Dr. Gaurav Luthra. By fostering an environment of knowledge-sharing and ongoing professional development, the institute aims to elevate standards in ophthalmology, ultimately expanding the reach of advanced eye care to a wider audience.
