Garhwal’s historic Ram Leela launched with laser show in Doon

Dehradun, 3 Oct: Shri Ramakrishna Leela Samiti, Tehri 1952, began a grand Ram Leela in Dehradun today with a laser show and also with a performance by folk singer Narendra Singh Negi. President of the Dehradun chapter of this Samiti, Abhinav Thapar stated that on the first day, today, Kailash Leela and Ram-Sita birth were staged.

Thapar shared that, this time, a laser show is also being held along with broadcast of a digital live telecast, as a special attraction.

The Ram Leela being held at “Tehri Nagar” in Ajabpur, here, is being held in the manner similar to the original Ram Leela that was organised in Old Terhi since 1952. Recital of Chaupai, Katha, Samvad, as well the style of staging of the play were similar to the famous and ancient Ram Leela of old Tehri. Thapar claimed that this will rekindle nostalgic feelings among the displaced families from Tehri, and informed that today’s guests included folk singer Narendra Singh Negi, MLA, Dharampur, Vinod Chamoli and MLA, Bhagwanpur, Mamta Rakesh.

DGP Abhinav Kumar and RJ Kavya and were also guests of honour during the inaugural function. Old Tehri’s Ram Leela in 1952 was held in ‘Azad Maidan’. It continued till 2002, after which Tehri was submerged. It was revived in Dehradun after 21 years in 2023.

MLA Vinod Chamoli said that the revival of the heritage of historical Garhwal is a matter of pride for all the residents of the state. Garhwali folk singer Narendra Singh Negi regaled the audience with his wonderful rendition of ‘Tehri Dubnu’. DGP Abhinav Kumar praised the initiative to connect history with the grand event. Bhagwanpur MLA Mamta Rakesh said that staging of Ram Leela at a grand level is bound to spread positive messages of Lord Ram among the youth.
