Dehradun, 19 Sep: Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) held a meeting with experts at Raj Bhavan on Friday to discuss the conservation of the Himalayas. On this occasion, he said that, in order to safeguard the Himalayan heritage and to find solutions to the challenges posed by climate change, it is essential to establish an “International Himalayan Studies University.”

The Governor said that the entire world today is facing climate change and rapid ecological transformations, and solutions must emerge from India. He pointed out that, currently, various institutions are working separately on Himalayan conservation and research, but due to the lack of integrated efforts, concrete solutions have not been achieved.

The Governor further stated that such a university is essential for policy formulation focused on the Himalayas, for the preservation of traditional and spiritual knowledge, culture, and biodiversity. He emphasised that this initiative would benefit not only the Himalayan states but the entire world.

The meeting also discussed the possible framework and structure of the proposed university. The Governor suggested that, as a first step, a preliminary meeting of universities working in the field of environment should be convened, based on whose outcomes a comprehensive proposal will be prepared and sent to the central government. He added that this is the first meeting held in this direction, which will serve as a foundation for future concrete initiatives.

On this occasion, Prof Annapurna Nautiyal, Dr R C. Sundriyal, and Dr M Rawat were also present.
