DEHRADUN, 28 Nov: Governor, Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd), was the chief guest at the launch of the book ‘Swallowing The Sun‘ by Lakshmi Murdheshwar Puri. The event took place at a local hotel on Thursday. During the event, the Governor praised the book, highlighting that it is dedicated to mothers and explores how to strengthen one’s thoughts and perceptions while preserving India’s priceless cultural heritage.
The Governor also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call, “One tree in the name of the mother,” urging the public to do something special for their mothers. He noted that the book not only respects the author’s heritage but also contributes to the global understanding of India’s freedom struggle. He appreciated the author’s ability to balance creative storytelling with historical accuracy and expressed confidence that ‘Swallowing The Sun” would find a special place in the hearts of readers worldwide.
Lt Gen Singh described the book as much more than a novel, emphasizing that it is a tribute to the ordinary men and women whose extraordinary courage shaped India’s freedom story. The central theme of the book revolves around two sisters, highlighting their personal struggles and the collective yearning of the nation to break free from colonial rule. He also underscored the importance of preserving our heritage and educating youth about our past, with special attention to the role women played in the freedom movement. He mentioned that the story takes readers to the bustling streets of rural Maharashtra and Bombay during the independence struggle.
Furthermore, the Governor pointed out that the book reinforces the values of courage, unity, and selflessness that defined the freedom movement. He encouraged young readers to learn about the sacrifices made for India’s independence and the responsibilities it brings. He also noted that through its strong female protagonists, the book sends an empowering message to young women, urging them to dream fearlessly and act decisively.
On this occasion, Lakshmi Murdheshwar Puri, Ambassador Kamlesh Sharma, Dr Sanjeev Chopra (Retd IAS), Anandita Chatterjee from the Prabha Khaitan Foundation, and Anuradha Pundeer Malla were present amongst others.
