Governor orders total transparency in appointments by State Varsities

Dehradun, 31 Oct: Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd), who is also Chancellor of State Universities, chaired a meeting of all the Universities at the Raj Bhavan, here, today.

At the meeting, he directed the universities to pay special attention to autonomy, transparency as well as accountability. He directed the officials of the university to ensure complete transparency in the appointments and meetings of the Executive Councils of the universities. He said that recommendations regarding affiliation of colleges should be sent to the Raj Bhawan only after thorough examination according to the prescribed standards.

The Governor added that all universities ought to submit monthly progress reports of their achievements, best practices, etc., to the Raj Bhavan. He said that solutions to the internal problems in the university should be found at the level of the Vice Chancellor and a positive atmosphere promoted in the universities. He asked all the Vice Chancellors to explore the possibilities of CSR and Alumni Scholarships for the University.

It was decided at the meeting that the swearing-in programme of newly appointed Vice Chancellors of state universities would be organised at Raj Bhavan. Presently, no swearing-in of Vice-Chancellors is being conducted. He said that the university ought to make every effort towards making the education system student-centred. All round development of students and improvement in the quality of education needed to be kept in mind. He said that the universities should take regular feedback about development works in the villages adopted by them and make every effort to develop them as model villages.

The Governor observed that research and technology are useful in the true sense only when people benefit as a result. Singh said that he would personally visit the universities to know their functioning. The Prime Minister had said that the third decade of this century would belong to Uttarakhand. Universities would have to play an important role in realising this goal. The Universities ought to work for a developed Uttarakhand through their academic knowledge, research and technological research.

The Vice Chancellors shared detailed information with the governor about the affiliation matters of their respective universities, transparency in various appointments, rain water conservation, e-office, cleanliness campaign and other works. They apprised the governor of various problems and challenges faced by them to which the Governor assured proper solutions.
