Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament to begin today at Nainital Raj Bhavan

Nainital, 6 June: Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd), while addressing the curtain raiser organised at the Raj Bhavan Golf Course here on Thursday, said that the 19th Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament will be held from 7 to 9 June. As many as 121 golfers from different parts of the country are participating in this tournament.

Lt General Singh said that the interesting aspect of the golf tournament is that this year children from 6 years of age to super veterans of 75 years are taking part in the competition. Seven players above 75 years of age are participating in the Super Veteran category, 18 in the Veteran (65 to 75) age group, 61 in the (general) age group, 11 players in the women’s category, 8 junior golfers in the age group of 15 to 17, including 5 boys and 3 girls, 8 junior golfers in the age group of 12 to 15, including 7 boys and 1 girl player and 8 under 12 years of age, including 5 boys and 3 girl players.

The Governor said that the objective of the tournament is to promote tourism in Nainital and to ensure maximum participation of women, youth and the general public. He said that through the competition, tourism of entire Uttarakhand including Nainital gets a boost. The natural beauty of the Raj Bhawan Golf Course is a favourite of the golfers. The players coming here from different parts of the country, besides playing golf, also promote the natural beauty of Uttarakhand and its tourist spots.

Lt Gen Gurmit Singh added that since last year, all the participants are very enthusiastic about the tournament and there was a good number of golfers. He said that efforts have been made to connect school children with sports through golf. Along with making the youth aware about the game of golf, the youth of the hilly region have to be connected to the game. Recently, the Inter School Governor’s Golf Cup tournament was organised, in which many schools participated enthusiastically, and girls were also well represented. He expressed confidence that in the coming years, national and international level players from Uttarakhand will emerge.

The Governor also thanked the sponsors who supported the Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament. It is worth noting that this time Indian Oil, Tourism Department, Sports Department Uttarakhand, ONGC, Hero Group, SIDCUL, Aditya Birla Group, Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors, Jeep, Milton Group, SBI, THDC, Trident and Shikhar Infra have cooperated.

Captain Colonel Vivek Bhatt of Raj Bhavan Golf Club said that this competition will run for three days.  A total of 121 golfers will play in the tournament in different categories which include Super Veteran, Veteran, General, Ladies and Junior Golfer categories. The Governor will inaugurate the game by teeing off at 8:30 a.m. on 7 June.

On this occasion, Secretary to Governor Ravinath Raman, Legal Advisor Amit Kumar Sirohi, Commissioner, Kumaon Division, Deepak Rawat, Additional Secretary Swati S Bhadoria, DIG Yogendra Rawat, SSP PN Meena, Assistant to Governor Amit Shrivastava, Major Sumit Kumar, Finance Controller Dr Tripti Shrivastava, Joint Director Information Dr Nitin Upadhyay, etc., were also present.
