Dehradun, 4 Jul: Uttarakhand is bracing itself for a unique logistical challenge as panchayat elections are being held during the peak of the monsoon season. The State Election Commission, in coordination with the Disaster Management Department, has devised a contingency plan to address any emergencies that may arise due to adverse weather conditions. The authorities have decided to keep helicopters on standby to ensure smooth conduct of the polls amidst the looming threat of landslides and road disruptions.
The nomination process for the panchayat elections commenced on 2 July and polling will continue throughout the month, culminating in the declaration of results on 31 July. Given that month of July is considered to be the peak monsoon period in Uttarakhand, the administration is gearing up for a simultaneous test of governance, managing the electoral process while addressing the natural hazards typical of the season. It may be recalled that the monsoon brings with it the danger of landslips, flash floods, and road closures, particularly in the hill districts, disrupting both civic and administrative functions almost every year.
Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman claimed during an informal chat with the media that the state is fully prepared to deal with any calamity that may impact polling activities. He said that district administrations have been put on alert and are maintaining constant vigilance to manage potential disasters. He added that with the Model Code of Conduct in effect, the State Election Commission is issuing continuous directives to the district magistrates to ensure the election process remains unaffected. The Disaster Management Department, he said, is committed to ensuring that polling personnel, election officials, and voters do not encounter any logistical obstacles during the electoral process. Suman further mentioned that the state is also focused on ensuring the safety and convenience of tourists and pilgrims who travel through Uttarakhand during the monsoon.
As part of the preparedness measures, two helicopters have been stationed and kept on standby to respond to any emergencies, as per the directive of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. These helicopters will be deployed in case of landslides or road disruptions that hinder movement of polling parties or affect access to remote areas. The aerial support will also be crucial for rescue operations or medical evacuations, should the need arise.
It may be reminded here that over 47 lakh registered voters across 12 districts are expected to cast their ballots in the Panchayat polls. The total voter count stands at 4,777,072, comprising 2,465,702 male voters, 2,310,996 female voters, and 374 voters categorised as others. Compared to the previous panchayat elections held in 2019, there has been a 10.57 per cent increase in the number of voters in 2025, amounting to an addition of 456,793 voters.
