Dehradun, 4 Jul: With the nomination process underway for the three-tier panchayat elections in Uttarakhand, the political temperature is on the rise across the state, especially in districts like Dehradun and Pauri where heavyweight entries have stirred the electoral atmosphere. Yesterday, Neetu Rawat, wife of Lansdowne MLA Daleep Rawat, filed her nomination papers for the Zila Panchayat elections, accompanied by a large number of supporters. Her candidature is backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party and has sparked notable political interest. She is now being viewed as a likely front-runner for the position of Zila Panchayat President, particularly in case the seat is reserved for a woman.
While the final reservation list for the post of Zila Panchayat President is still awaited, political calculations are already taking shape based on emerging probabilities. The previous release of a provisional reservation list had disrupted plans of several influential leaders, adding to the uncertainty. As the matter remains sub judice in the High Court, political parties are preparing for every eventuality. In this charged environment, Neetu Rawat’s entry is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to strengthen its hold in the region. She stated that her decision to contest the election is rooted in her desire to contribute to women’s development and to politically empower them. She has also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that the increased political reservation for women by the Centre is a commendable step in mainstreaming female leadership across governance levels.
The participation of prominent women has further heightened public interest in the ongoing elections. Among those who have filed nominations are Madhu Chauhan, wife of Vikasnagar MLA Munna Singh Chauhan, and Rajni Bhandari, wife of former Badrinath MLA Rajendra Bhandari. Both are well-known political figures in their respective constituencies, and their candidacies are being closely watched. Political observers believe that both Madhu Chauhan and Neelu Rawat stand strong chances of being elected as Zila Panchayat Presidents in their districts. If elected, Madhu Chauhan will create history by becoming the Zila Panchayat President for the third consecutive term, underlining her influence and consistent grassroots support.
On the other hand, Rajni Bhandari’s candidature from district Chamoli is not officially backed by BJP, claim the sources.
The administration has made comprehensive arrangements at all nomination centres to ensure a peaceful and orderly election process. Necessary instructions have been issued to all concerned officials to facilitate hassle-free proceedings.
With the electoral field now drawing participation from spouses of high-profile BJP leaders, and women leaders increasingly stepping forward to claim leadership positions, the panchayat elections in Uttarakhand are shaping up to be a significant indicator of grassroots-level political trends. More high-profile candidates are expected to file their nomination for the district panchayats, sources indicated. Besides this, heavy and intense campaigning is expected despite the inclement weather prevailing in the state and particularly in the hills.
