IIT-R Research Scholar selected for Newton International Fellowship 2020

Roorkee, 24Dec: Dr Sudha Shankar, a post-doctorate student at the Department of Biotech, IIT Roorkee, has been awarded the Newton International Fellowship for the year 2020. This fellowship will allow her to carry out research on anti-bacterial and anti-cancer drugs at the University of Glasgow with a research grant of almost Rs 1 crore.
Established by the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS), this fellowship allows the very best early-career postdoctoral researchers from all over the world to work in the United Kingdom (UK) research institutions.
Newton International Fellowship is co-partnered with the British Royal Society, the British Academy and Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
Dr Sudha says, “I am grateful to AMS and DBT for providing me this opportunity. I strive to serve humanity with my research so that we will be able to deal with new medical and chemical challenges faced by us. I am thankful to all stakeholders in my research journey which include Dr RP Singh, Dr RK Rai, my parents, and others.”
Previously, Dr Sudha had received the New Bhabha Fellowship at Imperial College, London, and Department of Science and Technology – Inspire Fellowship to carry out her doctoral studies at Indian Government’s labs. She aims to use her knowledge by joining government labs and contributing to ongoing research.
