Dehradun, 8 May: IIT Roorkee Professor Zillur Rahman (59) has been dismissed from his position after a PhD student filed a complaint of sexual harassment against him. An official order in this regard has been issued by IIT Roorkee Administration, the officials have confirmed.

The officials confirmed the development, stating that an investigation was conducted, and the findings were forwarded to the Board of Governance. Based on the BOG’s report, Rahman has been sacked. The allegation, filed in January by a female PhD student, had led to an inquiry by the institute’s internal complaints committee.

Rahman, who holds a BSc in Mathematics from Aligarh Muslim University and an MBA, taught Marketing Management at IIT Roorkee. At the time of the incident, around 15 students were pursuing PhD under his supervision. Sources indicate that this is the first such dismissal case within the IIT system.

According to reports, the victim belongs to the Hindu community, and the case has sparked extensive discussions on social media. Meanwhile, IIT Roorkee management has refrained from commenting further. Haridwar SSP Pramod Dobhal however clarified that no application has been filed with the police yet. He added that if the victim or the institute submits relevant information, appropriate legal action will be initiated.
