Important to keep cities & tourism sites clean: Lt Gen Singh


Gov inaugurates Swachhta Chaupal in Dehradun Cantt

Dehradun, 3 Feb: Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) inaugurated the two-day “Doon Swachhta Chaupal”, a conclave on sanitation, organised by the Dehradun Cantonment Board at Mahindra Grounds, here, today.

On this occasion, the Governor also inspected various stalls and inquired about waste disposal equipment made with modern technology and products made from plastic waste. Appreciating the stalls engaged in the programme, the Governor noted that various institutions and social organisations convert the waste material into useful material, a highly commendable effort.

Congratulating the Cantonment Board for this event, he said that the time has come to seriously deal with plastic and waste material and spread public awareness about it.

The Governor said that, from the 2014, a new revolution regarding cleanliness had started in the country, which has been taken forward by the Prime Minister in the form of ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’. He said that this is the beginning of change and this wave would go far in the coming times. He also expected all the urban bodies and panchayat chiefs present to make their urban bodies cleaner by adopting the Indore model in their respective areas.

The Governor said it is very important to respect Swachhta Mitras to maintain sanitation and cleanliness. Swachhata Mitras are the biggest messengers of God, who help society in maintaining cleanliness. He said that India is moving forward as a developed nation. Uttarakhand is also moving fast in various fields. The Governor said that there are immense possibilities for tourism in Uttarakhand, but to promote tourism, it is very important to keep the tourist places clean. There would be further increase in the number of tourists in Uttarakhand’s religious and tourist places as a result of greater cleanliness, through which the economy of the state would also improve further.

Singh asserted that he had confidence that through this two-day chaupal, the representatives of all the municipal bodies would take a resolution and make their area cleaner and better.

Director General, Defence Estates, Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director, Defence Estates, Dr DN Yadav, Cantt Board President Brig Anirban Dutta, Director, Urban Development, Navneet Pandey, Social Development for Community Foundation (SDC) President Anoop Nautiyal, Cantt Board Chief Executive Officer Abhinav Singh were among those present on the occasion.
