Nainital, 25 Sep: The Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, has recommended the name of Justice Narendar G of Andhra Pradesh High Court for the post of new Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court. It may be recalled that the current Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court Justice Ritu Bahri is retiring on 10 October. The appointment of Justice Narendar G will be considered effective from 10 October. The Supreme Court Collegium made this recommendation last evening.

It may be recalled that Justice Narendar G has been the senior-most judge of the Karnataka High Court. He was appointed to the Karnataka High Court in 2015 but was however transferred to Andhra Pradesh in October 2023, at his own request. He had been initially transferred to Odisha High Court but was later transferred to Andhra Pradesh on his request. Now, after serving one year as a senior judge in Andhra Pradesh, he has been recommended for promotion as Chief Justice of Uttarakhand.

A native of Karnataka, Justice Narendar G started his legal career as a lawyer in Karnataka High Court. He is considered to be a highly experienced judge in the judicial and administrative circles in the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh High Courts.

The Collegium has observed that at present the Karnataka High Court has no representation among the Chief Justices of the High Courts of the country and in view of this fact, Justice Narendar G is suitable to be appointed as the Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court. Therefore, after the retirement of Justice Ritu Bahri, Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court on 10 October 2024, Justice Narendar G should be appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court.

Narendar G was born on 10 January 1964. After completing his law degree, he enrolled as an advocate in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu on 23 August 1989 and started legal practice in Madras High Court from 1989 to 1992. In the year 1993, he shifted his registration as a lawyer to Karnataka State Bar Council and started practicing in Bangalore before his name was considered and finalised for appointment as a High Court Judge.
