Pithoragarh, 21 Dec: A significant landslide occurred yesterday in the Dharchula area in the border district Pithoragarh. The incident took place in the Tawaghat area. Several videos showing a massive cloud of dust rising after cracks developing in the hill have gone viral. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has taken cognizance of the incident and reported that traffic on the Tawaghat-Dharchula National Highway has been affected. He added that fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties. The district administration and officials concerned have been instructed to remove the debris and reopen the route as soon as possible.
The landslide occurred yesterday, during ongoing work on the National Highway in the Tawaghat area. Eyewitnesses captured the moment when a large part of the hill suddenly collapsed, creating a dust cloud. Speaking to the media persons, District Magistrate Pithoragarh, Vinod Giri Goswami, confirmed that no loss of lives or property has been reported so far. He admitted that the road is currently blocked, adding that the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) team are on-site, working to clear the debris and reopen the road for traffic. He observed that the landslide probably occurred during road widening work in the area. He assured that efforts are ongoing to ensure the road is reopened for traffic at the earliest.
